The kids did a short unit with a group of other homeschooled kids today. They were studying bridges, and the three main types; arch, beam and suspension. We made some bridges from straws and tape, then hung a cup and added the weight of various objects to see how long it would take until the bridge caved in. It worked out pretty well, actually. Who knew that straws could support about 2.5 pounds of added weight ! Amazing what the right structure will do.
So now, the kids are competing with one another by building their own spaghetti bridges ! At our next class, we'll do a weight test on all of them and see whose design is the strongest. Here's one of the spaghetti bridges that my girls were working on today.
